About The College Club
The College Club of Cleveland, despite its name, was never affiliated with a college or university. Originally an all women’s social club formed in 1897. The club’s purpose was to promote the social, philanthropic, and literary interests of Cleveland’s college educated women.
Today, we’re building a diverse community including 13 new townhomes in addition to 14 rental units in the original mansion.
It was a private residence first.
In 1903, WDB Alexander commissioned the Meade-Garfield architectural firm to build the house and carriage house overlooking Cleveland. The home was sold in 1917 to the Dangler family, and in 1951 The College Club purchased the residence for $27,000.
No detail overlooked.
The architects, Franklin Meade and Abram Garfield, incorporated simple geometric shapes in the living room and dining room panel designs. Three different patterns of leaded glass windows are featured throughout the house.
Remarkably, the original skeleton keys are still in the possession of the house. It’s truly amazing how much of the original history of this splendid residence remains, and it’s intriguing to consider how many stories and objects have been lost throughout its rich history.
There is still an arrow stuck in the wall of the 65-foot-long ballroom, a leftover reminder of the many lives of this grand space with a lightly used maple floor.
